Frequently Asked Questions

Welcome! Whether you’re here to spot sloths, paddle crystal waters, or hike hidden jungle paths, this FAQ will help you get the most out of your experience with us on Costa Rica’s southern Caribbean coast.

We also offer cultural and wildlife-focused tours like cacao making in Bribri, wildlife boat rides, rainforest hikes, and coastal nature walks.

Q: What types of tours do you offer?

We offer immersive nature and culture experiences, including sloth spotting, guided jungle hikes, kayaking adventures (including clear kayaks), beach walks, hidden waterfalls, wildlife photography tours, and cultural walking tours. Explore the Bribri Indigenous Territory—including cacao making and waterfall visits—cruise the Sixaola River by boat, paddle through the Gandoca Lagoon, or take guided walks through Cahuita National Park and the Gandoca-Manzanillo Wildlife Refuge. We also offer private full-day tours tailored to your interests, combining top experiences like kayaking, waterfall hikes, and wildlife viewing in one adventure-packed day. Our tours highlight the region’s biodiversity, Afro-Caribbean culture, Indigenous heritage, and laid-back tropical charm.

Q: Which tour is best for families or kids?

The Puerto Viejo Walking Tour and the Sloth & Kayak Tour in Punta Uva are perfect for families. They’re relaxed, fun, and full of wildlife sightings. The Bribri Indigenous Territory & Cacao + Waterfall Tour is also family-friendly—it includes hands-on chocolate-making, medicinal plant lessons, and a short hike to a beautiful waterfall. The Gandoca Lagoon Boat Tour is another calm option suitable for beginners and children.

Q: Is sloth spotting really guaranteed?

Yes! On our Puerto Viejo Walking Tour, sloth sightings are guaranteed. Our expert local guides know their favorite trees and behaviors, so you’ll have plenty of chances to observe and take photos.

Kayak Tours

Q: Do I need experience to go kayaking?

No experience is needed. Our kayak tours in Punta Uva and the Gandoca Lagoon are beginner-friendly and fully guided. The Sixaola River Tour is done by boat, not kayak, making it a great option for those who prefer to relax while exploring nature.

Q: What’s the difference between the Clear Kayak Tour and the Sloth & Kayak Tour?

The Clear Kayak Tour takes place along the Punta Uva coastline & Estuary in a transparent kayak—ideal for seeing reef life and scenery below the surface and wildlife.
The Sloth & Kayak Tour includes paddling through a calm estuary, followed by a short jungle walk with great chances to see sloths and monkeys.
If ocean conditions aren’t safe, both tours may take place in the estuary—with the only difference being the type of kayak.

Q: What should I bring for a kayak or boat tour?

Wear comfortable clothes you don’t mind getting wet, bring water shoes or sandals, sunscreen, and drinking water. We provide dry bags and life jackets.

Hiking & Nature Walks

Q: How difficult are your hikes?

We offer tours for all levels:

Challenging: Punta Mona Hike (with boat ride option), Hidden Waterfall Hike

Easy: Puerto Viejo Sloth Walk, Cahuita National Park

Moderate: Gandoca Lagoon Hike, Bribri Waterfall Walk

Q: What should I wear for hiking?

Wear closed-toe shoes or sturdy sandals, light clothing, insect repellent, and a hat. Bring water, snacks, and a swimsuit if there’s a chance to swim. Closed-toe shoes are required for the Hidden Waterfall Hike.

Q: Is the Hidden Waterfall safe for swimming?

Yes, it’s safe to swim in the natural pool. Your guide will let you know the best time to jump in and when conditions are safe.

Q: Can I return by boat on the Punta Mona Hike?

Yes! The Punta Mona Hike finishes at a remote beach, and you can return either by hiking the same trail or by boat along the coastline. Round-trip boat transport is also available if you prefer to skip the hike.

Wildlife & Nature

Q: What wildlife can I expect to see?

You may see sloths, monkeys (howler, white-faced, and spider), toucans, turtles, iguanas, poison dart frogs, caimans, and tropical birds. Wildlife sightings vary day by day, but our guides are skilled at finding them.

Q: Will we visit a national park?

Yes. Our Cahuita National Park Walking Tour and Gandoca-Manzanillo Refuge Tour take you through protected natural areas. Want to snorkel in Cahuita? Let us know in advance so we can check sea conditions.

Logistics & Planning

Q: Do tours include transportation?

Some tours include transport, others begin at a designated meeting point. We’ll help arrange transportation if needed—just ask.

Q: Where do the tours start?

Meeting locations vary by tour—some begin on the beach, others at trail entrances. You’ll get a confirmation message with all the details after booking.

Q: What happens if it rains?

Light rain is common here and usually doesn’t stop us. Tours continue rain or shine unless there’s lightning, flooding, or dangerous conditions—in which case we’ll reschedule or offer a refund.

All of our guides speak English and Spanish. If you need a guide in another language, please request it ahead of time and this will include an extra cost.
