Punta Uva, Costa Rica

Playa Punta Uva, located just 8 km south of Puerto Viejo Limon Costa Rica, features white sand, calm emerald green waters and a protected reef that is ideal for swimming.  For those seeking a beach with stunning Caribbean beauty and tranquility, it is the perfect destination.

The Beach is located in the south Caribbean cost of Costa Rica in the Provence of Limon. In the area there are actually two main beaches, Playa Punta Uva and Playa Arrecife.  There is a small trail that connects the two, with a breathtaking view of Arrecife– it is about a five to ten-minute walk. If to head down the beach toads Mazanillo you’ll get to Playa Grande, known for surfing and with fewer people around.

Aside from relaxing on the beach, Punta Uva offers many activities.  There is a coral reef near the viewpoint and on the Playa Arecife side of the beach, that is great for snorkeling– rental gear is available from a few different businesses in the area.  Kayaking in the sea or up the river is a great way to see more wildlife like birds, turtles, monkeys and sloths.  This is also a great place to go paddleboarding. Scuba diving is another activity for the more daring tourists to engage in. Best months for calm sea activities are in the months of September, October, and the beginning of November. The other months of the year, the ocean can get choppy, but you can also find it calm and flat.

Try to find the trail that goes to the viewpoint, located between Playa Punta Uva and Playa Areccife. Walk up the path, and enjoy the views, the cave and the big trees you can find on the trail. As a reminder, not to disturb the fauna, feed the wild life and damage or step on the reef.

Punta Uva is 8.5 kilometers from downtown Puerto Viejo de Limon, Costa Rica and is reachable by bike, car and bus. It’s quite far to walk (around 5 miles) but the bus is an easy way to get back and forth. Taxis are advised for the journey as they are a lot more reliable than the local public bus, which only runs two or three times a day. Cycling with a rented bike is also a good option and a very popular activity, I personally recommend above the others.
