Cahuita, Costa Rica

Discover Cahuita: A Caribbean Paradise

Cahuita, located just north of Puerto Viejo, offers a more laid-back and authentic Caribbean vibe. Once the largest town on Costa Rica’s southeastern coast, it remains a hidden gem where visitors can experience rich Afro-Caribbean culture, stunning beaches, and incredible wildlife. Whether you’re looking to snorkel or see wildlife in the national park, enjoy great food, or visit the hidden natural pools, Cahuita is a must-visit when you explore Caribe Sur.

Cahuita National Park: A Must-Visit Destination

Established in 1970, Cahuita National Park protects the largest coral reef along Costa Rica’s Caribbean coast. This biodiversity hotspot is famous for its white sand beaches, crystal-clear waters, and an abundance of wildlife. The park is home to over 35 species of coral and 100+ species of fish, mollusks, crustaceans, and sea turtles, making it a top destination for snorkeling and diving.

Snorkeling & Scuba Diving

Cahuita’s coral reef is the largest in Costa Rica, teeming with vibrant marine life. When snorkeling, expect to see colorful tropical fish, stingrays, sea turtles, lobsters, and even harmless nurse sharks resting along the reef. Since the reef is a protected area, snorkeling is only allowed through a guided tour with a local company. You can contact us to book your snorkeling tour and explore this underwater paradise.

Snorkeling is available year-round, but the best visibility conditions are during the dry season (September, October, and mid-November), when the sea is calmest and clearest.

Hiking the Park from End to End

The park features an 8 km coastal hiking trail connecting Puerto Cahuita to Puerto Vargas. This scenic route passes through rainforest, mangroves, and stunning beaches, offering frequent wildlife sightings. Expect to see monkeys, sloths, anteaters, raccoons, tropical birds, and even the occasional eyelash viper, a beautiful, non-aggressive snake. Hiring a local guide is highly recommended to spot hidden wildlife and learn about the ecosystem, but if you just want to enjoy the magical beaches, you can explore on your own. If you can make it to Punta Cahuita or Puerto Vargas, it’s well worth the effort.

A unique feature at Puerto Vargas is the 3 km boardwalk that takes you from the coast through deep jungle and mangroves. The sound of the jungle is impressive, making it a great alternative for rainy days. You can explore on your own, or with a guide to adds extra value to the experience.
