Manzanillo-Costa-Rica

Manzanillo

For some the most beautiful beach in Costa Rica. The small, laid back fishing village of Manzanillo is the last town due south of Puerto Viejo de Limon.  Lying on Costa Rica’s gorgeous South Caribbean coast. The main attraction of this tiny town is its fabulous white sand beach strip, that is lined with palm trees, and is bathed in the calm and gentle light blue waters of the Caribbean Sea. Manzanillo has several colorful local markets and plenty of sodas or restaurants that serve up some of the best seafood in the entire country. Maxi’s is a locally renowned restaurant and bar with traditional Caribbean cuisine and fun vibes!

The town is located within the Gandoca- Manzanillo Wildlife Refuge which has great hiking routes that will take you to some stunning small beaches. Located just a kilometer from the end of the road inside the protected area is a famous viewpoint that is a must-see destination for those exploring the area.  There are also trails for hiking where you can explore the biological reserve or head to Punta Mona, a full day round-trip hike.  It’s my personal favorite hike in the south Caribbean coast. Along the way you’ll come across several more vibrant viewpoints.  It is recommended to hire a guide for the trip, for safety and direction– plus they are great for pointing out wildlife and vegetation that are tough to spot for the untrained eye.  If you’re afraid of mud or maybe some mosquitoes this is not for you maybe taking a boat ride to Punta Mona it’s also an option and an incredible adventure. If visiting Manzanillo it won’t disappoint. Travelers come here to relax and enjoy the slow pace of the caribbean life, whether that be swaying in an oceanfront hammock, kayaking and snorkeling around the reefs calm waters and mangroves, or sunbathing on its white sand beach. There are also lodging options for those that would like to stay closer to the colorful but relaxing town.

Directions

Puerto Viejo de Limon and Manzanillo are about 15 kilometers away from each other – a quick twenty-minute drive south on 256. Taxis are advised for the journey as they are a lot more reliable than the local public transport, which only runs two or three times a day. Cycling with a rented bike is the most common way it’s also a good option.
